The One Secret to Making Your Personal Brand Unforgettable: Storytelling

We all know that behind every successful brand, there’s a powerful story. But why does storytelling matter so much?

Brand Story

🐝 Burt’s Bees – More Than Just Lip Balm

There are plenty of lip balms made with honey, but why did Burt’s Bees become so successful?

The answer lies in the philosophy and story of its founder, Burt Shavitz. With his long beard and rugged hat, this old beekeeper wasn’t just a face on the packaging—he embodied the brand’s natural philosophy.

But why did that make such a difference?

Burt Shavitz started out as a photojournalist in New York City. One day, he decided to leave behind city life and embrace a simpler existence in nature. As a beekeeper, he found himself with excess beeswax and began crafting handmade natural candles. They quickly became popular, and soon, his business expanded into skincare and lip balm—leading to the birth of an iconic brand.

But hthe-one-secret-to-making-your-personal-brand-unforgettable-storytellingere’s what’s truly remarkable:

Even after achieving massive success, Burt never returned to city life. Instead, he continued living in a small log cabin with his dogs, surrounded by nature.

"What’s the point of making money? I’m happiest living in nature with my dogs."

Every winter, I find myself buying Burt’s Bees lip balm even though it’s nearly twice as expensive as other brands. Initially, I picked it up because it was on display and had natural honey ingredients. But once I learned the story behind it, I felt emotionally connected to the brand.

So what was it about Burt Shavitz that made his brand so powerful?

🌿 The Key to Brand Success: Consistency & Authenticity

Burt Shavitz wasn’t a polished CEO or a marketing genius. He looked more like an eccentric old man from the countryside. But what made him different was his unwavering commitment to his philosophy of natural living.

He infused his values into both his products and his personal life.

He remained true to his beliefs, even after financial success.

By continuing to live a simple life, he reinforced the authenticity of Burt’s Bees.

His story became the brand’s core narrative, driving its long-term success and strong customer loyalty.

Does the same principle apply to personal branding?

🚀 In the End, People Remember Your Story

People often ask me for advice on personal branding. My response is always the same:

"Share your journey."

For years, I’ve been connecting startups with accelerators and venture capitalists worldwide, both online and offline. My goal? To discover promising startups—the hidden gems—and introduce them to investors.

But here’s the reality: Investors hold all the power, not entrepreneurs.

To understand their mindset, I immersed myself in their world:

✔ I studied how they evaluate businesses.

✔ I interviewed both investors and founders.

✔ I kept up with emerging technology and business trends.

And throughout this entire process, I documented and shared everything.

📌 Every time I met an investor or founder, I posted about it on social media.

📌 Whenever I conducted an interview, I wrote and published an article.

📌 At startup events, I shared insights and key takeaways.

Before I knew it, I had become a recognized content creator on EO Planet, a startup online magazine in Korea, with my articles reaching 5,000 to 10,000 views.

One day, a startup founder asked me:

"How do you manage to write so many articles consistently?"
writing

The truth? Even I wasn’t sure.

I was simply curious about how investors think, and I felt a deep responsibility to help startups get the funding they deserved. So I kept researching, learning, and writing.

Over time, executives from major VC firms started recognizing me. Some even reached out for meetings.

That’s when I realized something crucial:

I was able to break through barriers—not because of my credentials, but because I had a story.

Back then, I didn’t fully understand why people remembered me.But looking back, I now see that it wasn’t my resume that made me stand out. Instead, it was because of these reasons:

📌 I earned the nickname "Dongmicus" for my relentless execution speed.

📌 I documented my journey and had the courage to turn it into a book.

📌 I actively engaged with my audience, turning insights into action.

📌 I fearlessly pursued global publishing and content creation.

Even today, I don’t have an impressive resume.Yet people remember me because I am someone who openly shares my journey and growth.

🔥 What Are You Truly Passionate About?

On LinkedIn and across various social media platforms, I often see people who are completely obsessed with their work.I may not fully understand their expertise, but one thing is always clear:

They are absolutely committed to what they do.

And in reality, there aren’t many people in this world who pursue something purely out of passion.

Thankfully, these passionate individuals share their journeys, inspiring people like me to push forward, despite challenges.

So, let me ask you:

📌 What are you truly passionate about?

📌 Do you have the courage to share that journey with others?

If you do, then within a year, you will become someone that people in your industry—and beyond—seek out. 🚀
